Kathy Grass Valley, California |
Kathy is a full-time gardener and garden designer, working in the foothills of northern California near Nevada City. Mixing food and flowers together into garden environments that feed the tummy and the spirit! The climate and elevation in the foothills are favorable for gardening all year-round. In her gardens, fragrant herbs provide a constant backdrop for seasonal vegetables, berries, ... even fruit trees, and the ever-changing color-show created by the flowers. When not playing in the dirt, Kathy is actively supporting others who do - putting in some overtime hours assisting local grass fed, grass finished, pastured beef rancher Jim Gates -NevadaCountyFreeRangeBeef.com- with marketing and ranch business, ... and as co-editor of the LocalFoodCoalition.org Website and Network, advocating for local agriculture and building relationships between local growers and the people who love to eat local food. In her spare time ... ha! ... Kathy is tending her own garden, and teaching herself how to cook ... better! Notes and thoughts about the local food scene in the foothills can be found in her blog at BriarPatch.coop. |

Melanie Davis, California |
Melanie (the one on the left) came to Davis for college, but stayed for the Co-op, which was her gateway to natural and local foods, seasonal eating, and goat cheese. Now that she's discovered the joys of real food and the pleasures of cooking, she'll never go back. |

Mellisa Grass Valley, California |
I hold a couple of degrees, one in liberal studies, one in journalism. I used to hide in my bedroom closet (the quietest, most private place I could find) and write short stories that I illustrated as I went along. Somewhere along the way, I caught the reporter bug, which then progressed to the blogger bug (much more serious, indeed). I work full time at BriarPatch Co-op Community Market in Grass Valley, Calif. (where my partner, Charles also works), blogging, social networking, writing continuously, and doing just about anything that may be needed in the Co-op atmosphere. Sure, I may be a jack of all trades, but I still only answer to Mellisa. |

Wendy Nevada City, California |
Wendy Van Wagner is a certified Nutrition Educator who lives in Nevada City, Ca and works throughout the Gold Country. She is a passionate professional and at-home cook who savors the opportunity to entertain guests and to create connections in the community by breaking (and baking!) bread. Wendy owned and operated a home-delivery meal service called First Street Suppers in Los Angeles which aimed to provide nutritious and tasty meals on the doorsteps of tired and hardworking families. Since moving North, she has assisted Aubergine Catering with meal delivery and private events. Wendy has also worked in association with Jane Hammond Events to cater intimate brunches and dinner parties at clients’ homes. With the foundation of In the Kitchen, Wendy has been teaching cooking and nutrition classes in both public and private schools, including Berkeley Youth Alternatives, a community center offering enrichment classes to underserved populations, The North Oakland Community Charter School. She also offers consultations to schools that are interested in providing healthier lunches for their students. She has been involved with the Edible Schoolyard project at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, which actively integrates the crucial connections between agriculture and culinary arts. In 2006 she designed and produced the hot lunch program at the Oakland Community Charter School. In the fall of 2006, Wendy worked on the Alexander Valley Vineyard in Healdsburg, CA as the assistant chef in residence for the grape harvest and crush season. Today she is focusing on farm to table catering in conjunction with Bluebird Farm in Nevada City, Ca. Wendy was certified as a nutrition educator by Bauman College in Berkeley, California. She received her B.A. in Psychology and Cultural Anthropology from Pitzer College, a member of The Claremont Colleges. Much of her interest in food and nutrition is derived from her love of disparate cultures and the thread of communion we share at the dinner table. She is a member of Slow Food, the Weston A. Price Foundation, and the National Association of Nutrition Professionals. |
