La Boca Center for Sustainability works a 3-acre market garden that provides over 40 varieties of high quality, local, organic (beyond certified) vegetables to restaurants, natural foods markets, and CSA members in and around Durango, Colorado. Under its non-profit designation, La Boca Center for Sustainability oversees an educational farm and garden developed to provide a working site to train prospective farmers interested in limited day, high-altitude annual and perennial fruit and vegetable production and marketing techniques.
Other projects and activities at the center include an on-site saw mill, draft horse farming, animal husbandry, an animal powered composting system, and blacksmithing services. The center’s historic 180-acre site, which lies along the Los Pinos River, offers a practical demonstration of integrated sustainable agriculture, from building techniques to growing food, animals, and resources for local communities. La Boca’s education programs provide opportunities for people of all ages, from elementary to college students, to get first-hand experience in small scale farming.
