We are a certified organic (CCOF) farm and use no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics or genetically modified organisms.
We conserve soil by rotating crops, planting cover crops, tilling in refuse and working the ground at appropriate times (not when it’s windy or muddy).
We provide safe and fair working conditions for our help; our one full-time, year round employee has been working with us for 10 years.
We keep no livestock, although we are conscious to keep the soil environment healthy for earthworms and encourage a diverse population of soil organisms.
We plant and maintain diverse windbreaks to encourage wildlife; we keep windbreaks unmowed to provide cover and we set out bird water and bat boxes. We use bio-diesel in our tractors and trucks. All of our fertilizers come from a maximum distance of five miles from our farm.
We use alfalfa dust as our primary fertilizer, which we get from a pellet mill that manufactures pet food. The mill used to dispose of the dust by burning it, polluting the air and adding work for the mill owners. Now it is responsibly used on our farm. This is the type of solution we seek out when dealing with the challenges of farming.
We are box warriors and work with our customers to encourage returning our boxes for our re-use. We also recycle the plastic ‘panta pak’ fruit trays within the box.
We participate in Farmers Markets in our region and seek out relationships with stores that have an understanding of the interdependency between growers and the grocery market.
