Crossroad Farm is a diversified vegetable farm, and bedding plant and flower nursery, where Tim & Janet Taylor grow over 100 varieties of vegetables on 40 acres in the peaceful mountain valley of Post Mills, Vermont. Their 14 greenhouses produce over 200 varieties of flowers including living, hanging works of art by Janet. They grow around 20,000 pounds of greenhouse tomatoes annually.

”Since we started farming in 1980 we have been seeking methods of growing vegetables that satisfy our personal philosophies -- reasons for starting farming in the first place: We grow fresh vegetables that not only taste fantastic but are also healthy and nutritious. We provide a reasonable living for our workers and ourselves. Most importantly, we produce our crops by methods that will make the soil stronger and viable for generations to come.”

Without realizing it, the Taylors were practicing something called “sustainable” farming. According to Vern Grubinger, author of Sustainable Vegetable Production From Start-Up to Market, “...adherents of sustainable agriculture judge farm practices not only by their effect on short-term yield and profit, but also by their impact on water quality, soil productivity, human health, and the local community.”  As Vern aptly points out, “sustainable agriculture is a continuum with the unattainable goal of total sustainability at one end.” At Crossroad Farm, their pursuit includes the extensive use of crop rotations, soil improvement by applying compost and animal manures, growing cover crops, and turning under crop residues.

Janet and Tim Taylor sell the the fruits of our labor directly to our customers at their farm stand, at the Norwich, Vermont Farmers Market, to restaurant chefs, local food co-ops like the Hanover Co-op Food Store, and to children’s summer camps.
