Jennie Hoene, her husband Phil, and 10-year old daughter Cami live on the 102-acre farm that belonged to Phil’s grandmother and has been in his family for over 100 years. They raise Icelandic sheep for breeding stock as well as meat, and sell wool products such as yarn, roving, and felted items. Sometimes they have a litter of AKC Registered Great Pyrenees puppies available for purchase; four adult Great Pyrenees work as guards for the sheep.
Ewenique Icelandic Sheep Farm is an active vendor at the Bloomington Community Farmers Market and the Bloomington Winter Farmers Market. It operates a CSA in Columbus, Indiana, offering pasture-fed lamb, an array of naturally grown produce, homegrown wheat berries in two varieties, and edamame. They grind and sell wheat flour, pastry flour, and cornmeal at the farmers market. The farm offers tours for schools, homeschool groups and others. The family chose to raise sheep because they believe that sheep are easier on the land, eating many more vegetables than cattle or goats. They raise them organically, on pasture only. They also raise peacocks.
