Howdy from the Upper Skagit Valley and the shores of the Salish Sea!
The eastern end of the very fertile Skagit Valley boasts
large annual harvests of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries,
potatoes, apples, peaches, plums, cherries, nuts and a plethora of
vegetables. We also have dairies, beef, lamb, pork, poultry, shellfish,
salmon and honey. We have large farms that produce vegetable seed and
tulips and smaller family farms of every stripe. We even have a
BreadFarm! CSA's, Farmer's Markets and farmstands, and let's not forget
wineries and breweries! Eating local is no chore here. Okay, so olive
oil and coffee have to be "imported", but we do have a couple of local
roasters for the latter.
My partner Keith and I live on 6 wooded acres on the wild and scenic Skagit River. We have the beginnings of a small orchard, several berry patches, and four chickens (Blanche, Violette, Rose and Julia). We also share our dome-icile with a Newfoundland dog Sauksea.
There has been radio silence lately because of a major life transition. We have begun working at Keith's parents' candy shop/bakery/pizzeria in Birch Bay and are bringing our passion for local food to the business. We divide our time between home (Skagit) and the shop (Whatcom county) so we have doubled our local resources. The shop is summer only so we are really able to reap the benefits of local food. We're also a local producer as we make many of our own candies (molded chocolate, marshmallows, carmel, etc.) and bake breads and many other goodies. It's a lot of work, but it's very rewarding to finally be able to contribute to our wonderful local food economy.
Since it is now our quiet season, I'll be working on establishing the habit of blogging again and share what we find as local eaters and local producers.
See you on the blog!
